grandpa i'm a computer science engineer

whenever I tell my relatives particularly the ones who are of my grandfather's age that I'm doing engineering, they are very impressed. they say "oh you are doing engineering. that's wonderful. which branch?" when they hear computer science , they look a little confused and then ask "what do u learn in that?" In layman terms, I say I learn about computers. and so next time the computer in our house breaks down, I am summoned and told to look into it. They say "you are a computer science engineer na ...see what has happened to the computer, it is not starting"

and that's an embarrassing situation for me......come on we are not taught how to repair the computer in college, we are taught how to work on them.......and so when i say " oh i can't repair it" They are astonished "but you are a computer science engineer. aren't you? don't they teach you all that in engineering?"

the other day, my aunt wanted me fix the television when it wasn't working and was disappointed that being an engineer i couldn't do it. Another big dilemma that my relatives face is .....what is the difference between IT and CSE? ........I have tried differentiating them ....but it always come downs to the same thing that we both work on computers....

but recently when i had to give a mock interview ....and i was asked these same questions ......
well friends, i fumbled ...and mumbled something but couldn't give a good answer....well now many of us are going to face interviews for jobs for MBA .... maybe its time to find a proper answer well here's what i found in wiki answers which i liked ---

Best way to visualize it is imagining an up side down pyramid.

level 1 - chip design level which uses devices to make integrated circuits, power electronics. This is area of Electrical Engineering.

level 2- Computer Science where computer scientist know the circuits/hardware that exist and develop solutions to incorporate it.For example when multi core processors were developed, the computer science people had to develop code to work on multiple cores. they had no knowledge of how the registers work in a cpu...but they have knowledge on what is stored in the registers(what we learnt in csa and aca)......they have a black box view. its the study of algorithms, data structures, complexity theory, all the way down to learning what makes an operating system work. Its the science of computing, not the electrical engineering of the hardware

level 3-IT is next level higher which is the highest level.Information technology is learning to use computers in business or in any practical application.IT studies the impact of applications developed on business/industry. They see to it that these solutions are applied correctly and continue to work in the future.

welll...friends ....i want a few more suggestions or better answers to these basic questions ....which my grand parents want to know .....and now even the interviewer wants to know......

the other day i told my grandpa that i got placed. He asked " how much will you earn?" i said about 25000 a month....so he says " bhagwan jane what you people will do in the office ....i can never understand that ....but as long as they are going to pay you .....i'm happpy!!!!!!! "

Well,not exactly.

wiki should be taken with a pinch of salt as its usually edited by people like me and anna who have no other better thing to do :P

Computer Science is more of a generic term that encompasses all study related to computer design, implementation and application.

Information technology or IT as its popularly known is application of Computer Engineering principles for storing, sharing and manipulation of information via networking et al ....

P.S. -> Not that I know much abt either :P

P.P.S. -> Even I had a hard time to tell my relatives that what is the use of being an engineer if I can't get a job in PWD or Railways :banghead:

and yes, they think I am going to do an IIM or a FMS not an MBA, now how can somehow do an IIM is beyond the limits of my comprehension.

i liked the last para the most .... LOL

P.S.-> Waise I am still thinking abt the answer ....

If the question would have been asked by my father r grandfather , the answer would have been very simple...papa i had done my btech from KIIT , u shud take this into account before throwing work of repairing computer r doing any computer job.
If the question would have been asked by interviewer , it would hav been much more simple , SIR we had just enter fourth year n the difference between it n cs comes in final year. Currently the best answer that u can get from me is that IT people had no idea about basics of computer i.e compiler n we cs people do hav(lol....but before interview prep urself a bit for compiler)

this is proably the answer u shud also give to save urself n puzzle the one in front of u
